Volkswagen Beetle

• Harry Truman is inaugurated for his second term as President.

• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is organized for the purpose of collective security.

• Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munchin star in On the Town.

• The Volkswagen Beetle arrives to the US.  Only 2 are sold in America that year.  It later becomes the greatest automobile phenomenon in US history.

Life Details

• Linwood Whitten was born on January 10, 1888 in Amherst County.

• In 1907 he married Susie E. Alcock and they had 9 children.

• Prior to entering the ministry, Whitten was involved in various business ventures and served on the Charlottesville City Council.

• He loved flowers and often wore a rose or carnation in his buttonhole.

• Pastor Whitten died on July 17, 1961 and was buried at Rock Spring Methodist Church in Faber, VA.

• He was described as being “blessed with a large family and large heart” and “that the whole world was his congregation; for he loved everyone, and everyone loved him.”
