Last week (July 24-July 28) Ivy Creek UMC hosted its 4th annual Christian Arts Academy (CAA). The theme for this years CAA was "Walk in Love". We began each evening with music and a devotional by Ian Joyce, one of our returning college students. This year the academy included Stained Glass, Digital Photography, Cake Decorating, Fly Tying, Gardening, Origami, Scrapbooking, Watercolor Painting, Drama, Drawing, Huck Towel Embroidery, Celtic Dancing, and Spin Art. The week-long event drew on the talents and time of a large cross-section of Ivy Creek's diverse congregation to provide summer enrichment for children of the church but also, more importantly, children of the surrounding community. We especially try to reach out to children whose summer may be most in need of enrichment. In the end, however, the volunteers that make the CAA possible are enriched at least as much as the children.
It is impossible to convey the entire experience, but it is worthwhile to provide a brief glimpse into the great work done at CAA.
In Drawing, the students began by first looking carefully at their first subject, themselves! The messy work of cake decorating began with filling piping bags and learning how to make basic designs elements like stars and shells. The stained glass class began the week by studing the stained glass windows within the church. In Celtic Dancing, students worked hard to master the basic steps. Slowly over the course of the week students gained confidence in their work. In Drawing class, the initial portraits were completed and other projects were begun. In stained glass, the layout of each project was finalized and work began on cutting glass, fitting metal, and soldering. In cake decorating, each student designed the layout of their cake and began creating it. In Fly Tying, students worked through a book on fly tying written by a 13 year old.
Since many of the volunteers came from work directly to the CAA each evening, the artwork they most appreciated was that which came from Doug Rosson's Outdoor Cooking class. In fact, they appreciated the artwork from the first night's Smoked Pork Barbecue class so much that none was left. Wonderful artwork from a simple vessel. Toward the end of the week Doug's class produced art from cast iron Dutch Ovens. It was equally well received!
The week ended with a program which included a fractured parable presentation by the drama class, celtic dancing, awards, and music. The final products from
each of the classes were displayed, and everyone enjoyed a picnic. Ivy Creek truly appreciates the efforts of all of the volunteers and staff, as well as all of the wonderful children that made our church a lively place all week long.
